3 Reasons Why Reading Bingos Will Motivate Students to Read at Home
For students to become avid readers, it is important for them to read at home on a daily basis, in addition to reading at school. From my experience as a student, I remember having to keep track of my reading at home with weekly and monthly reading logs. At times, those 20 minutes of reading and completing my daily reading log seemed very daunting!
For the past eight years, I’ve tried numerous ways to get my students motivated to read at home. I’ve taught Kindergarten, 3rd, and 4th grade and have tried a variety of different reading logs over the years. This past year, I used Monthly Reading Bingos with my students. I was pleased by the student participation as well as the positive feedback about student engagement from my families. Why do Monthly Reading Bingos keep students motivated to read every night at home? Here are three reasons why:
1. Student Choice
I try my best to provide student choice as much as possible in my teaching. The Bingo Boards provide student choice on a daily basis. They get to choose which reading activities to complete and in which order. Every month, there are new reading activities, which makes a total of 288 reading activities over the course of 12 months.
2. Student Engagement
Engaging in different reading activities on a daily basis allows students to discover different ways in which they can read. When you think about sitting and reading a book, what comes to mind? Reading on a couch, chair, or bed? There are so many other ways that you can enjoy reading a book, and Reading Bingo provides students with the opportunity to read in a variety of different ways.
3. Reading Celebration
At the end of every month, I have my families send in a picture of their child completing their favorite reading activity. I print out these pictures and hang them up in the classroom. It is a great way to celebrate their reading at home and spotlight their favorite reading activities from the month. This bulletin board also builds classroom community, because students are able to see which reading activities their classmates enjoy doing at home.
In all my years teaching, this was the first year that I received positive feedback about my monthly reading log. I’ve finally found a reading system that keeps students engaged and motivated to read every day at home.
